What NGF Actually Does to Your Brain

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is not a supplement trend. It is a protein first identified by Nobel laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini in the 1950s, one of the most consequential discoveries in neuroscience. NGF governs whether neurons live, die, grow new branches, and maintain their connections over time.

The reason Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is different from every other adaptogen is simple: it's the only known natural source of compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier to directly stimulate NGF synthesis inside living brain tissue.

Those compounds are hericenones, found in the fruiting body, and erinacines, found in the mycelium. Both have been demonstrated in peer-reviewed studies to upregulate NGF production. Erinacines in particular have been shown to stimulate NGF in the locus coeruleus, a region of the brain involved in attention, stress response, and memory consolidation.

What NGF does, practically:

NGF doesn't make you smarter overnight. What it does is maintain the substrate for intelligence. It keeps existing neurons healthy, supports the growth of new neural projections, and, crucially, supports the survival of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain. These are the neurons most severely depleted in early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

A 2009 double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in Phytotherapy Research showed that subjects taking Lion's Mane for 16 weeks showed significantly improved scores on cognitive function tests compared to placebo, and scores declined again after supplementation stopped. This is the hallmark of a real, physiological mechanism.

Why extraction method matters:

Here's what most brands won't tell you: hericenones are only present in the fruiting body, not the mycelium grain substrate used in cheap products. And both hericenones and erinacines require dual extraction (hot water and alcohol) to be fully bioavailable.

Mycelium grain powder, which is what the majority of supplements on the market contain, has been shown in independent testing to contain mostly starch from the grain substrate, not the active compounds. When you see "mushroom extract" without a beta-glucan percentage or dual-extraction process stated, assume it's grain.
